New Juárez mayor to be sworn in Sunday
JUAREZ - Juárez will swear in a new mayor Sunday amid a climate of uncertainty on what the future holds for the city’s police and security forces.
Héctor Murguía, 57, will become mayor of the deadliest city in North America. Murguía, a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party or PRI, has planned to reform the way government collects taxes so the city obtains more revenues to direct more money toward police.
The city will already see changes in the police structure courtesy of the new state governor. César Duarte consolidated city and state police to better investigate and prosecute homicides in Juárez.

Reyes Ferriz, current mayor of Juárez, has subtly attacked Murguía saying he inherited a corrupt local police force in 2007. He also recently said police used to carry out kidnappings and executions during Murguía’s administration.
Murguía was invited but did not attend Reyes Ferriz’s last address Wednesday. He could not be reached for comment.
